Here are two essential traits your main characters should have:
1. Credibility
Almost every novel needs strong, believable characters. Next to the story itself, they are the most critical element of your book. Great scenes matter. Well-developed settings matter. But ultimately, it’s your characters who drive the narrative.
To be credible, they need to act like real people – unless, of course, you’re writing fantasy, mystery, or science fiction. Even then, they should still feel authentic within their world. A great way to achieve this is to make sure they aren’t flat or boring – unless their journey involves transformation, like a flower blooming throughout the story.
2. Depth and Quirks
Give your characters quirks – unique habits or traits that make them stand out. Maybe your protagonist always uses a particular word incorrectly. Or they have to touch every lamppost they pass. Perhaps they stare at people just long enough to make others uncomfortable.
These quirks not only make characters feel more three-dimensional but can also create opportunities for conflict and growth. Why do they come equipped with these quirks? Are they rooted in childhood trauma? Anxiety? Are they habits they despise but can’t break?
Quirks can also impact the storyline in unexpected ways. Maybe another character tries to help them overcome their habit. Or perhaps someone gets provoked by their constant misuse of a word, leading to a heated argument. Imagine a character leaving the group – not because of the protagonist’s quirk, but because everyone else finds it so cute, sparking feelings of jealousy.
These details don’t just make your characters memorable – they make your story more engaging. And with that now it’s your turn to make the best out of it. Find new ways to make your characters interesting. Build them up as if they were born for a whole series, even if your novel is a standalone. Let them rise, let them travel through their own journey. Or maybe just let them have the time of their lives!
