What is a Plotter

Ah, a better name, right? Actually, a plotter is the exact opposite of a pantser. Plotters love to have their novel laid out before starting the actual writing process. Some need to have it outlined in order to begin.

Of course, there are countless variations as to how detailed a plotters planning can be. Some focus just on the content of each scene, while others meticulously plan the exact atmosphere to make the novel even more believable – not that a novel without perfectly crafted conditions wouldn’t be believable. It’s more about helping the author striking the right tone.

Plotters often keep track of details that won’t even make it into the novel, like a character’s backstory or their development during childhood.

Fun fact: While planning generally helps plotters to stay within the boundaries of their intended story, it can stifle creativity to a certain degree. So again, whether you are a plotter or a pantser really depends on how your brain is wired. There’s a right way for everyone.
